A Step-by-Step Guide by Notary of Lewis Center

Are you transferring vehicle ownership in Ohio? Whether purchasing, selling, or gifting a vehicle, notarizing the vehicle title is essential to ensure the transfer is legally recognized. At Notary of Lewis Center, we streamline the process, ensuring it is quick, precise, and hassle-free.

Why Notarization is Required in Ohio

The State of Ohio mandates that a notary public witness and certify the seller’s signature on the Certificate of Title. This requirement safeguards both the buyer and seller by verifying that the transaction is conducted voluntarily and with proper identification.

Documents Needed for Car Title Transfer in Ohio

Before meeting with a notary, please ensure you have the following documents:

  • Original Ohio Certificate of Title

  • Valid government-issued photo ID (Driver’s License, Passport, etc.)

  • Odometer disclosure (if applicable)

  • Lien release (if a loan has been paid off)

  • Buyer's name and address

How to Complete the Title Transfer & Notarization

Step 1: Fill Out the Assignment Section
  • Complete the “Assignment of Ownership” section on the back of the Ohio title.

  • Include the buyer’s full legal name, address, and the purchase price.

  • Provide the mileage (odometer) disclosure if required.

Step 2: Seller Signs in Front of a Notary
  • Do not sign the title until you are in front of the notary.

  • The seller must be present and provide valid identification.

Step 3: Notary Adds Ohio-Compliant Verbiage

An authorized Ohio notary will complete the acknowledgment or jurat with the following language:

State of Ohio
County of [Your County Name]
Sworn to and subscribed before me by [Seller's Full Name], this ___ day of [Month], [Year].

Notary Public,

State of Ohio

My commission expires: _________

Step 4: Buyer Takes Title to BMV

Following notarization, the buyer must take the signed and notarized title to the Ohio BMV to finalize the title transfer and pay any applicable taxes and fees.

Special Situations

There are a few special situations that may come up during the title transfer process. For example, if the seller has a lien on the vehicle, you'll need to include information about the lienholder on the title certificate. You may also need to provide proof that the lien has been paid off before the title can be transferred.

If the seller has a power of attorney, they may authorize someone else to sign the title certificate on their behalf. In this case, you'll need to provide a copy of the power of attorney document along with the title certificate.

If the seller has survivorship rights to the vehicle, they may be able to transfer the title to the new owner with the need for a notary. However, you'll still need to complete the appropriate sections of the title certificate and submit it to the Ohio BMV.
