Purchasing Cars/Boats/Motor Cycles from a Private Parties : Notary

This is the process of purchasing a vehicle from a private party. Sellers can make an appointment with the Notary Public to get the title notarized. Once the title is notarized, Buyer can proceed to BMV and get the new title for the vehicle.


Role of Buyer:

Once you have found your dream car or the one you liked will satisfy your requirements. Then make at least a verbal agreement with the seller regarding the price condition of the vehicle. Before making the payment, make sure the seller has the original title that he can hand over to you and the title is not having any lease on the day of purchase. If everything looks perfect for you then you can ask the seller to get the title notarized. Make sure the seller's name is matching the name on the title.




Role of Seller

Once you have a potential buyer who has accepted your terms and conditions and is willing to pay an agreed amount for the vehicle.

Now you can make an appointment with the Notary Public to get the title notarized.


Be ready with the following things

1. Original title

2. Valid ID matches to the name on the title

3. Buyers name

4. Buyers address

5.Price of the Vehicle

6. Actual mileage

7. Status of the odometer?

8. Sign the title only in the presence of Title notary

Role of the Title Notary

Once the seller reach out for notarizing the title transfer

1. Make sure the title is original or duplicate. Confirm the status of the title

2. Check when the title is issued and ask the seller if any questions you deem appropriate

3. Ask the seller for the valid ID along with the title

4. Once the title name and the ID name matches you Can proceed to the notarization

5. Ask for the buyer details such as name and address

6. Ask the seller if the address on the ID is current? if no then write the current address on the title

7. Ask the seller provide the actual mileage or if there is any issues regarding the odometer

8. Make sure the seller signs the title in front of the notary

9. Now, you can proceed to perform the notary

10. Make sure to enter the transaction into the notary Journal


Note:

  1. If the seller is not present then notarization will not be performed.

  2. If the title is already signed by the seller and the seller is present, ask the seller to sign in the notary journal to make sure the sign is the same then notary can be performed.
