When to Apply for a New OCI Card or Renew an Existing One

New OCI Card Application

If you’re a foreign national of Indian origin who has never held an OCI card before, you may need to apply for a new card if:

You have obtained foreign citizenship and wish to leverage the benefits of an OCI card.

Your parents or grandparents were Indian citizens, making you eligible for the card.

You are married to an Indian citizen or another OCI cardholder for at least two years.

OCI Card Renewal

The Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card does not have an expiration date; however, updates are mandatory under specific circumstances to maintain accurate records.

Age-Based Renewal and Update Requirements:

  • Under 20 Years of Age: OCI cardholders must upload a copy of their new passport and a recent photograph each time a new passport is issued. This update must be completed online within three months of receiving the new passport to reflect significant changes in appearance.

  • Between 20 and 50 Years of Age: No renewal or document upload is required upon receiving a new passport during this age range.

  • Over 50 Years of Age: OCI cardholders must upload a copy of their new passport and a recent photograph once after obtaining a new passport. This update must be completed online within three months of receiving the new passport to account for potential changes in appearance.

Adhering to these guidelines ensures that OCI cardholders' records remain current, preventing any disruptions during travel or when accessing services in India.
